Recently, I learned about a national competition that the American Immigration Council holds every year. It’s a contest that encourages fifth graders to write and submit a reflection on America as an Immigrant nation. 2022 marks the contests’ 25th year, and if I am not mistaken, this is the second year that a Chicago local has won. How cool is that?
I had the pleasure of hearing the poem read out loud by this year’s winning author, Elin Joy Seiler, whose poem is entitled “Where I’m From”. It is a beautiful piece that teleports the audience all around the world through snippets of immigrant’s lives; illustrated by vivid colors, native languages, and memories that melt your heart. It is a powerful reminder that behind every “case”, is a human worthy of respect and advocacy.
In today’s news there’s not a lot of happiness, so this was a very refreshing surprise for me. I am glad to share this so that it may make your day a little brighter.

Recientemente, me enteré de una competencia nacional que el Consejo Estadounidense de Inmigración realiza todos los años. Es un concurso que anima a los estudiantes de quinto grado a escribir y presentar una reflexión sobre Estados Unidos como nación inmigrante. 2022 marca el año 25 de los concursos, y si no me equivoco, este es el segundo año que gana un local de Chicago. ¿Cuan genial es eso?
Tuve el placer de escuchar el poema leído en voz alta por la autora ganadora de este año, Elin Joy Seiler, cuyo poema se titula “De donde soy”. Es una hermosa pieza que teletransporta a la audiencia por todo el mundo a través de fragmentos de la vida de los inmigrantes; ilustrado con colores vivos, idiomas nativos y recuerdos que derrite tu corazón. Es un poderoso recordatorio de que detrás de cada “caso” hay un ser humano digno de respeto y defensa.
En las noticias de hoy no hay mucha felicidad, así que esta fue una sorpresa muy refrescante para mí. Me complace compartir esto para que pueda hacer que su día sea un poco más brillante.
